The jhumka guide: styles, sizes and how to wear them

A jhumka is an earring with a bell-shaped dome at the bottom, usually hanging from a stud or a smaller motif. The dome catches light as it moves, which is why jhumkas feel so festive.

Temple jhumkas carry traditional motifs such as Lakshmi, peacocks or lotus flowers, often in an antique gold-tone finish with red and green stones.

Pearl-drop jhumkas have a fringe of pearl beads below the dome, soft and bridal.

Stone-set jhumkas use AD stones or coloured stones on the dome for more sparkle at night.

Everyday jhumkas are small and light, easy to wear for a full day.

Small jhumkas suit office days and daytime functions. Medium ones work for most festivals and family events. Big statement jhumkas are for weddings and receptions, when they can be the centrepiece.

Heavier jhumkas are most comfortable for a few hours at a time. If you plan to wear them all day, choose a lighter pair.
